HOW THE BAKE SHOP STUDIO CAME TO BE…
Owner and Cake Designer Kate St Laurent began her career not in the pastry arts but in Fine Arts attending Fanshawe in London and then completing her BFA at NSCAD in Halifax. Since graduating Kate decided to use her artistic skills in a medium of buttercream and began working in bakeries around London. After learning the art of cake decorating she decided to open Bake Shop Studio in 2016 after 7 years in the business of buttercream. Her Fine Arts background is the main focus of Bake Shop Studio and its here she creates beautiful and delicious works of edible art.
As well as creating beautiful cakes, Bake Shop Studio also started as a shared commercial kitchen. A secondary focus of the business was to help other businesses get a footing into the industry by sharing the kitchen and day to day expenses. To date we have helped 10 local businesses get started on their own. These local businesses have gone on to sell at markets, wholesale to retail, attend pop-up shops and even expand to their own production facilities or pastry shops.
We were so happy to get a chance to help out so many baker friends in St Thomas and share our kitchen. Since opening in our new location in the heart of Wortley Village in Old South we have focused on opening our retail shop, expanding our menu and closed our incubator kitchen space.
Today, Bake Shop Studio specializes in hand crafted sugar flowers, edible succulent cupcakes and custom tiered wedding cakes and above all, cakes which taste great. In addition, for budding bakers who want to learn new skills we offer limited classes on cake decorating, designer cookies and cupcakes.
